From a Blouse Store to a Fashion Brand: Why Naming Matters

The client wanted a blouse store called Divine Collection. We suggested a bigger idea and a better name. Here is why both mattered.

Some brands begin with a pitch deck. Sakhi Sutra began with a conversation in a café. The daughter of a soon-to-be client told us her mother was planning to open a store selling only ready-made blouses, under the registered name “Divine Collection”.

The idea was viable. But we saw two problems: the business model had a ceiling, and the name had no memory.

Problem 1: A single-category store has limits

A blouse-only store is simple to run, but it caps growth:

  • Lower repeat purchases and lifetime value
  • Smaller average basket size
  • Almost no cross-selling
  • Heavy dependence on walk-in traffic

Women rarely shop for ethnic fashion one category at a time. So we recommended repositioning the store as a women’s fashion destination: ready-made blouses, kurtis, short kurtis, imitation jewellery, corsets and fashion essentials under one roof.

Problem 2: “Divine Collection” was forgettable

A name has one job: to be remembered and to mean something. “Divine Collection” had low distinctiveness, weak recall, overlap with existing retail names and no emotional or cultural connection.

After brand workshops and naming exploration, we landed on Sakhi Sutra. Sakhi means a close female friend. Sutra means thread. Together, the name feels warm, familiar and rooted in craft, exactly how the store wants customers to feel.

The logo carries the idea further: a Marathi-inspired letter S drawn with a needle-and-thread motif, so fashion, heritage and craftsmanship read as one.

What a good retail name needs

  1. Easy to say and spell in the languages your customers speak.
  2. Distinct from other stores nearby and online.
  3. Room to grow. Avoid naming yourself after one product if you plan to sell more. Namo Chairs faced this: its range grew to stools, tables and baby products.
  4. An emotional hook: a feeling, a relationship, a place or a story.
  5. Available as a trademark, domain and Instagram handle.

A good name won’t sell a bad product. But a forgettable name makes a good product work much harder.

FAQ

Should I name my store after the product I sell?

Only if you will never sell anything else. A broader, emotional name leaves room to grow, which is why Divine Collection became Sakhi Sutra.

What does Sakhi Sutra mean?

Sakhi means a close female friend and Sutra means thread, a name that connects friendship, femininity and craft.
