A Local SEO Checklist for Small Businesses in India
When someone searches "near me", you have seconds to be found. This is the checklist we use for clients, from Google Business Profile to website basics.

Local SEO is how you show up when people nearby search for what you sell: “pav bhaji near me”, “coaching classes in Kharadi”, “plywood shop in Pune”. For most small businesses, it’s the highest-return marketing there is, because the people searching are ready to buy.
1. Google Business Profile
- Claimed and verified
- Most specific primary category
- Correct map pin, hours, phone and website
- Products, services or menu filled in
- Real photos, updated monthly
- Regular posts
Our Google Business Profile guide covers each step in detail.
2. NAP consistency
NAP means Name, Address, Phone. It should be identical on your website, Google, Instagram, Facebook, Justdial, IndiaMART, Swiggy, Zomato and any directory you appear in. Small differences confuse search engines.

3. Reviews
- A simple way to ask: QR code on bills, WhatsApp follow-ups
- Replies to every review within a few days
- Never buy fake reviews. It risks your listing.

4. Your website
- City and area in page titles where natural (“Coaching classes in Wagholi, Pune”)
- A page for each location or branch
- Address and phone in the footer of every page
- Embedded map on the contact page
- LocalBusiness schema markup
- Loads fast on mobile
- Click-to-call and WhatsApp buttons
5. Local content
Write about your area and your customers: local events, neighbourhood guides and case studies with real places. It helps you rank and builds trust.
6. Directories and citations
List your business on the directories your customers use: Justdial and Sulekha for services, IndiaMART and TradeIndia for B2B, Swiggy and Zomato for food, and industry-specific platforms.
7. Serving beyond your city
If you work across India, like we do from Pune, create service pages that explain how you work remotely, and case studies from different cities as you get them. Local SEO for your home base and national SEO for services can run side by side.
8. Track it
Check Google Business Profile insights and Google Search Console monthly: calls, direction requests, website clicks and which searches find you.
